About Us

What We Believe

  • Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior — the center of everything we do.
  • One God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • The Bible is the Word of God and our guide for Christian faith and practice.
  • Open Communion every Sunday — every believer is welcome. It's the Lord's table, not ours.
  • Baptism: when a person confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and comes to be baptized, we practice baptism by immersion. When a believer wishes to join our fellowship, we accept their previous baptism.
  • Christian unity. "In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, charity." We take that seriously. Our tradition teaches: no creed but Christ, no doctrine but Scripture. We are a Bible church with Christ at the center.
  • We believe everyone is a child of God and is welcome in God's house, the Church.

Our Story

It starts in 1869, when a handful of Atchison believers first tried to plant a church. The current church took root in 1882, when twenty-five charter members signed a covenant, and we've been here ever since.

The building you'll walk into on Sunday was dedicated in 1913 and has held more than a century of weddings, funerals, potlucks, and Sunday mornings. Along the way we welcomed nearly 2,000 members at our 1932 Golden Jubilee, elected our first woman elder in 1976, and kept adapting while holding on to what matters.

Nearly a century and a half later, we're still doing what those twenty-five people signed up for: meeting, growing, and sharing God's love in Atchison.

The full history — 1869 to 1982, carefully preserved — is kept at the church office. Ask, and we'll share it.
