When You Don't Know What to Believe

Aug 2, 2026  •  William Mitchell, M.Div., BCH

Continuing last week's journey into Romans 8, this message turns to one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture. There are moments when words fail us — beside a hospital bed, at a graveside, waiting on a doctor's call. Paul's answer in Romans 8:26-28 is that the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Prayer is not a performance: God meets us where we are, and He never lets us struggle alone.

Pastor Mitchell shares the story behind Horatio Spafford's hymn "It Is Well with My Soul," untangles what Romans 8:28 does and doesn't promise — not that everything is good, but that in all things God is working for good — and offers his own testimony of a college season when he didn't know what he believed, but knew that he believed. When you have no words, the Spirit does. When you cannot see tomorrow, Christ is already standing there.
